San Pedro – a true slice of traditional Spain

Originally a quiet village, San Pedro is rapidly becoming the place to be. People relocate here to get away from the sometimes hustle and bustle of slightly larger towns. San Pedro is located under the Sierra de Ronda mountain range. It is just a 7 minute drive from Puerto Banus and 10 minutes to Marbella. This is also one of the reasons why you should rent a villa in San Pedro.

The whole centre of San Pedro has been converted with a stunning central boulevard running through the middle. Here there are cycling routes, fountains, children’s play areas and an amphitheatre to watch local groups and flamenco. To the East of the boulevard is an ice rink and skate park where locals and holiday makers hang out in the evenings. They create a lovely family atmosphere. If you ask us locals where to go for a nice evening stroll, they will all mention this boulevard.

Along the Boulevard you will find many new eateries and bars. You will certainly not be bored renting your villa in San Pedro. San Pedro has plenty of wonderful eateries where you can enjoy, traditional Spanish food in restaurants such as Alfredos and La Parilla de Viviana, Thai, Italian, Mexican and some wonderful fish options as well. If you do want to just gaze out onto the shimmering Mediterranean, you can eat right on the beach at Kaluha Kalu or for those special occasions please try El Ancla also located on the beach.

The beach side of San Pedro is known as Nueva Alcantara. Here you will find stunning apartment complexes where both Spanish and Europeans have holiday homes. In the summer months’ people are either at the beach or the pools.

Why it is so great to rent a villa in San Pedro

The town of  San Pedro de Alcántara is a square-shaped collection of tightly-knit white buildings. Not only that but also straight and narrow streets and a main central plaza that is overlooked by a lovely church. Compact, bright, laid-back and certainly extremely traditional, San Pedro de Alcántara is a favourite with holidaymakers of a certain type, particularly those who take pleasure from strolling through peaceful streets, enjoying a relaxing cup of coffee or glass of beer, sampling a selection of terrific tapas and simply enjoying the sunshine.

Away from the cheek-by-jowl apartments, shops, bars and offices that comprise the busy yet somehow perennially peaceful centre of San Pedro de Alcántara, the newer urbanisations of Nueva Alcántara form something of a front garden for the town. Cross the busy N340 coastal road and a kilometre’s worth of wide boulevards, grid-shaped developments and grassy lawns stretch out before you. They are fronted by the shimmering azure-blue of the Mediterranean. Here, hundreds of expats and Spaniards have holiday homes, enveloped by an other-worldly sense of stillness. In the summer, everyone’s either at the beach or round the pool, and in the winter, everyone’s everywhere but here.

Nghtlife and eating out

Facing the coastal road – and unmissable to any driver stuck at the lights and heading west – is the Hogan Stand Irish Pub. It is a magnet for holidaymakers staying in San Pedro. The Hogan Stand is pretty much the only non-Spanish bar in the town. As a result, is an intriguing place to visit, alone amidst plenty of bodegas, discotecas and Da Bruno’s restaurants. Inside, you receive a warm welcome, slightly higher prices but an unmistakeably ‘holidaymakers’ atmosphere.

Elsewhere, San Pedro will surprise you with the choice and vibrancy of its nightlife. The ‘Forbidden Square’ is somewhat shabby during the day – as many nightspots tend to be. However, at night the ten or so bars-cum-clubs that front the square stay open until late. They pump out a variety of disco and pop music all night and attract a young and mostly local crowd who spill out into the square and mingle happily until sunrise.

Additional night activity you can get in the form of a couple of vibrant salsa bars, a delightful smattering of tapas bars and the Plaza de Iglesia. There are plenty of free open-air concerts take place at numerous intervals throughout the year.
